In the early days of the offensive on Vovchansk, near Ukraine’s border with Russia, photographer Kostya Liberov captured a stark image of the human cost of war. Stationed in the Kharkiv region for over a month, the team was suddenly attacked by Russian soldiers. Thanks to the quick deployment of FPV (first-person view) drones, the assault was thwarted, but the aftermath was devastating.
The photograph, taken from the drone, depicts the bodies of fallen Russian soldiers after the failed assault. For Liberov, the image carries a profound sense of sorrow. “This was once a living person who has now left this world forever,” he reflects. The loss of life, he notes, could have been avoided if not for the ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
While the photograph is a sobering reminder of the brutality of war, it also evokes a complex mixture of emotions. Liberov’s perspective highlights not just the physical consequences of violence, but also the underlying tragedy of lives lost in conflicts that could have been averted through peace.
