Young Photographer Arlo Captures Nature’s Beauty in Award-Winning Shot

A young boy's passion for nature and photography has earned him a national award for his remarkable shot of a slow worm in motion.

A 10-year-old boy from Cornwall has gained national recognition for his talent, winning the Under-12 mobile category at this year’s RSPCA Young Photographer Awards.

Arlo, from Grampound Road, wowed the judges with his striking photograph of a slow worm slithering across black and white marbled rocks, accented by yellow lichen, at Polly Joke beach in Newquay. The glimmering, bronze-like hues of the slow worm’s body earned the photograph its title, Slippery Slow Worm.

Reflecting on the moment, Arlo said, “It was a challenge taking the photo because the slow worm was slinking so quickly towards the beach. But I’m really happy I captured it.”

The award ceremony took place at the Tower of London on Thursday, where Arlo and other young photographers were honored for their achievements. Wildlife photography experts Rachel Bigsby, Ellie Rothnie, Andrew Forsyth, and Emma Jacobs formed the judging panel, praising the winners for their creativity and technical skill.

Each category winner received a trophy and a selection of prizes as part of the event.

Arlo expressed his surprise and gratitude for the win, saying, “I feel quite privileged. I wasn’t expecting it!” His love for wildlife is a driving force behind his photography. “I’m curious about the natural world, and if something takes my interest, I’ll take a photo of it,” he explained.

The RSPCA Young Photographer Awards aim to encourage young people to connect with nature and express their creativity. Arlo’s success highlights how a keen eye and a passion for the environment can lead to extraordinary achievements.
