Sofia: A Decade
For me, photography is a collection of experiences unfolding spontaneously before and after the moment of capture. Every image is a reflection of life—its way of answering the questions constantly posed to us. Through non-deliberate shooting, I strive to reveal the artistic aspects of everyday life, where we are the protagonists.
The frames in this series explore melancholy and freedom of spirit amidst contemporary visual saturation. I create a space where the viewer can be guided by their own emotional compass and explore the world beyond their personal existence. This ecosystem of events, which shapes the lives of young people, is a whirlwind of sentimentality and authenticity that photography manages to preserve outside of time. The project was created over the past decade in Sofia and documents the friends I grew up with. I use a digital camera that allows me to shoot continuously, yet I select only the frames that serve as a true testament to the moment. In post-processing, I intentionally seek low contrast and a “washed-out” effect, reminiscent of something abandoned or already used. In this way, I create a visual document in which everyone is free to recognize themselves and interpret the image according to their own truth.

I’m Nikola Ganev, a 25-year-old photographer and visual artist based in Bulgaria. I graduated from NATFA with a degree in photography and have been working in the field for the past ten years.
My work explores identity, alienation, and the search for spirituality in the modern world. I’m interested in creating images that feel both aesthetic and real, capturing interconnected human experiences from a personal yet observant perspective.
I’ve worked on a range of projects, including organizing an exhibition, shooting on set for short films and music videos, and directing my own music video work.
