For many, disabilities are seen as obstacles, but for Jijo Das, a gifted artist and photographer with Down syndrome, they have become the very thing that has helped him shatter limits and redefine what’s possible. His story is one of perseverance, creativity, and the unwavering support of his family.
Diagnosed with Down syndrome at birth, Jijo was confronted by societal challenges from a young age. Yet, his family made sure that he never saw his condition as a limitation. “They always made me feel like I could do anything, so I just keep trying,” Jijo shares, expressing deep gratitude for the constant encouragement from his family. His older brother, Aniket, has been instrumental in Jijo’s success, guiding him not only as a sibling but as a mentor, creating unique learning methods to nurture Jijo’s creativity.
“Learning for someone with Down syndrome is not the same as for an average child,” Aniket explains, highlighting the need for flexibility and patience in teaching Jijo. It was this dedication that led Jijo to discover photography in 2011 after receiving his first digital camera.
However, his journey into photography required more than just technical skills, it took time, patience, and a tailored approach. “I’ve had to be more than just his brother; I’ve had to be his design school, art school manager, and personal trainer all rolled into one,” Aniket admits. Despite the obstacles, Jijo’s persistence, paired with his family’s tireless support, led to significant milestones. In 2022, Jijo’s photographs were featured at the Anurag Gupta Memorial Photography Exposition, gaining widespread recognition.
Photography, for Jijo, became much more than an artistic outlet, it was a way to express emotions and tell stories when words weren’t enough. “Art has given me a way to show people who I am,” says Jijo, illustrating how his work became a language of its own.
Jijo’s talents extend beyond photography. In 2024, he was appointed as the official photographer for the XTREME ENDURO race, showcasing his growth as an artist. “I like going to work, making new friends and clicking good pictures,” he says, reflecting his passion for his craft.
His creative spirit has also caught the eye of influential figures. Ultraviolette CEO Narayan Subramaniam praised Jijo’s unique perspective. “At Ultraviolette, we believe diversity in talent and perspective drives us forward, and Jijo is a shining example of this,” says Subramaniam. Jijo was even tasked with photographing the launch of Ultraviolette’s F77 Mach 2 motorcycle, an event that cemented his place in the photography world.
Jijo’s journey proves that with the right support, no dream is too big. “I’m a rockstar,” he says with a smile, embodying the spirit of confidence and determination that defines his journey. As Jijo continues to break boundaries and inspire others, he remains a symbol of how creativity and perseverance can defy all expectations.
Jijo’s path is just beginning, and with every picture he takes, he continues to inspire the world to see beyond disabilities and embrace the potential within everyone.
