For photographer Tony Harnett, the dream of capturing the full Moon rising over Wales’ highest peak, Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), was not just an idea—it was a mission five years in the making. The now-viral image, showing tiny figures illuminated by moonlight as they traverse the summit, has captured the imagination of viewers across social media. But behind the beauty of the frame lies a story of remarkable patience and persistence. Originally from Salford, Greater Manchester, and now a regular in the rugged landscapes of Eryri (Snowdonia), Tony knew this was never going to be an easy shot. "Some shots demand more patience and persistence than others," he explained, reflecting on the journey that led to this breakthrough moment. The challenge was immense. Not only would Tony need a clear, cloudless sky and the right phase of the Moon, but he also had to position himself with absolute precision. Armed with mapping apps and astronomical data, he spent years scouting, calculating, and waiting for the right alignment. Timing, location, and weather—all fickle variables—had to come together in a fleeting window. Finally, on a crisp Friday night, camping near the twin lakes of Llynnau Mymbyr, about six miles (10km) from the summit, everything aligned. Under the open sky, the Moon rose like a beacon over Yr Wyddfa, just as tiny silhouettes of hikers crested the ridge. With his camera poised and his heart racing, Tony captured the shot he had long dreamed of—the Earth, Moon, and humanity briefly and beautifully entwined. "I'm over the moon," Tony said, the joy clear in his words. "It's a shot I have wanted to get for a good few years... and I've finally got it." The photograph is more than a technical accomplishment; it is an emotional one. It speaks to the relationship between humans and nature, of journeys made under starlight and the timeless pull of the mountains. The ethereal glow cast by the Moon transforms the rugged landscape into something almost mythical—a reminder that nature still holds moments of magic for those willing to seek them.
